i worked at chipotle as a minor and they made me work later than was legal for a minor, they took away breaks (which they argued was legal because you got a free meal with your break, but that wasnt true) and they made me work overtime but clocked me out at 40 hours and tried to make me work off the clock (i only fell for that once) also multiple managers sexually harassed the high school girls who worked there.

I worked at applebees at age 17 and the second example that you gave for the Chipotle first hand experiences happened a lot, id be there past 9:30 or 10 almost every shift I worked just standing there because I was a host and my cleaning didn't take nearly as long as the rest of the jobs. The food service is very sketchy and most of the time leaves you feeling very undervalued for your work

I had no idea stuff was going on like this. I’m 16 and work at a HomeGoods and I’m always given a 15 minute break in a shift less than 6 hours. I can’t imagine working a 12 hour shift as a teen. My longest shift was 8 hours and I had absolutely no energy afterwards 😭

Wait. you're an adult? lies. also teenagers aren't children. i mean legally yes but logically no. Unless they were holding these "children" against their will i don't care. however their food has been sketch for a minute and i support the fine but only for destroying the legacy of dave in the kitchen.

throwback to when I worked at target (I was 16) and I would often work 16 hour weekends (8 hours at a time, which in itself is actually legal here) however during those shifts I literally did my managers jobs. like they had me run the ENTIRE front of the store on multiple occasions. This includes helping other cashiers (some that were older than me, like literal 40 year olds with kids) using my managers numbers to clear alcohol purchases from minor cashier (meaning I went to cashiers under 18 and approved it for them to sell alcohol) you’re not meant to have this authority unless you are an adult and a manger. basically the managers had me do their jobs at 16 years old while they went upstairs to gossip. there was also one time where I repeatedly asked for my 10 min break as I need to change my tampon and take medicine for cramps as I was in extreme pain and was losing my ability to stand and do my job properly. My manager told me that she “just couldn’t have me off a register right now” I ended up getting my break an hour or so late, which by then I had already almost bled through my pants and was in intense pain. not to mention they would occasionally have me work an extra hour (9 hour shift total, not allowed for a minor here) and they wouldn’t even put it down for me working that hour, so I worked an extra hour illegally and didn’t even get paid. companies rarely care about their employees and I highly doubt they ever will, it’s sad honestly. they don’t pay people enough to live off of and they use the absolute hell out of them.

I remember working 12hours shifts with the lunch-pause 1hr in the middle, what made it actually 13hrs per day, 5-6 days a week. It was a toy-shop and i consulted and carried heavy boxes filled with the toys. The way took 1,5hrs in one direction. I was 18, female, always hungry, always tired, 16 hours a day not at home. I came home, ate if I had the power to, and cried myself to sleep for couple of hours just to wake up and go to work again. hard times

It’s a shame that not allowing breaks is so common. My husband and I have both had multiple jobs with that problem. No matter what you say they don’t care. It’s not normal or okay to go hours and hours without sitting, drinking, or eating !! Even at Publix (a grocery chain in the south known for “being a good place to work”) , thankfully they have strict laws in my state and I was given a mandatory 1 hour lunch, but I could go hours at that job basically not allowed to get water or go to the bathroom. Being the adult I am, if I needed to I just started going, but I got yelled at, side eyed, and scolded multiple times FOR STEPPING AWAY FOR 2 MINUTES TO FUFILL MY BASIC NEEDS. That job would get so busy I feel like I almost passed out multiple times from lack of food/water. We were not allowed to have a water bottle and could only get water if we walked away or stepped into the managers office. I needed up just walking off that job because when Corona hit, they said we were not allowed to wear masks (and this is when the panic buying was at its peak and the store was insanely busy) because it would “make the customers uncomfortable “. Yeah , I had enough after that. But I feel bad for people who have no choice but to put up with horrible practices like that.

My job is at student accommodation and they pay us in rent discounts rather than actual money, meaning that we're technically 'volunteers'. This means we have basically zero rights and that they can give us as much extra work and extra responsibilities as they want without consequence, since we'll just be told to quit if we don't like it. My shifts are 24 hours long on weekend days (10am to 10am) and 14 hours on week days (6pm to 8am). Sometimes we don't get breaks at all. It's an extremely hard job and sometimes harrowing. We deal with medical issues, mental health, maintenance issues/repairs, police/criminal activity and huge parties (even during covid). To add to it, we ALSO have to plan and run events outside of our scheduled shifts. We're so overworked, under-staffed (because everyone keeps quitting) and exploited, but we can't do anything since the university doesn't care about us. And then to top it all off, the university got voted uni of the year last year for my country ! :') I hate my job but I can't do anything about it. I've been working here for almost 2 years. Started when I just turned 19 and I'm 20 now. There are people even younger than me doing this job too. Capitalism !

Let me tell you about my local theme park who is basically known for exploiting child labor. I was like 15 or 16, making $6.30 an hour (minimum wage in my state at the time was $7.45 but being a minor, they could pay me less) and I would be scheduled for 12+ hr days in the summer (before open to after close) but since I could only legally work 10 hrs, I got two 1hr and 15min breaks during the shift where I wasn't allowed to leave the tiny breakroom at all. The only food there you had to pay for and I was eventually fired because I ate a pizza they were throwing away (it was near the end of the night and it was a full, untouched pizza still in a box). They forgot to give me my break and so I didn't get it until it was nearly illegal and the kitchen was closed by then so I literally couldn't buy any dinner. The owner came in and immediately accused me of stealing and I said they threw it out (I was a child, why would I think that taking their "trash" was stealing?). I even offered to pay for it and they still fired me on the spot. I literally bawled as I was escorted out and my mom was pissed at them, she called and cussed them out. Honestly Fuck that place.

FUN FACT: Credit card tips can equal you being paid less Here’s how I was “legally” scammed - So I worked at a little mom and pop ice cream shack for 2 summers during high school to make some money for college. - First year We got cash tips all was okay. - Second year my boss asked if we wanted to recieve credit card tips too. We agreed. Then my paycheck started to see MAJOR CUTS. My boss deflects our questions . - Turns out that in my state a waitress is “A food worker who receives tips.” (clearly I’ve simplified it but basically credit tips=waitress) - Cash tips can’t be tracked. Credit tips can. Waitresses make HALF minimum wage in my state. - Would have been nice of my boss to mention that. BITCH. - I told my fellow employees and we basically all left because our boss wouldnt even acknowledge that it was wrong. - Proud to say I am now the manager of my new job - Basically keep your eyes and ears out fellow young people. If it seems weird. It's probably weird.

As a 23 yo manager who regularly works 14 hours shifts I can see how mangers minimize the toll a long shift can take on a young person. For a 20 year old it’s fine but for a teenager that’s way too much to expect and it’s so irresponsible to run your shift being so comfortable breaking labor laws😖

Managers will manipulate the f- out of teenage employers. They will act like they are your friend, maybe slip you a free item sometime, and make you feel like you owe them something. I worked from 6am-3pm every weekend for 3 months (alone for the first 4 hours until my manager or a coworker would come in at 10 am.) I remember mentioning that my 18th birthday was coming up and my boss said, “I can’t wait when you turn 18 so I can schedule you more hours and at night!” I was already working 22-30 hours a week on top of school and extracurriculars and applying for college. This was also a job where customers can’t catch you sitting or being on your phone, so I was always on my feet and ended up making my scoliosis worse because I was so stressed out. All she could think of was productivity, even if it was at the sake of my mental and physical health. Edit: I’m at college now and the college jobs at my school are required to only scheduled students 10-20 hours so they are able to focus on their studies.

I LITERALLY worked at Wendy's IN MASSASSACHUSETTS when I was 15 and 16 - last year lol - and I worked between 30 and 36 hours a week, only working 5 days a week (so 7 hours or so a day 5 days a week). Legally children under 18 are only supposed to work a maximum of 32 hours, and they can't work after 11. My first week I stayed until 1 am. I was homeschooled at the time, so my boss said it was fine and that I wouldn't get in trouble and he would still pay the hours I worked. Which um... is illegal lol. He was doctoring my pay so it looked like I worked different days than I did so I would get paid but he wouldn't get in trouble. He cut down my breaks also. I was supposed to have 45 minutes every 5 hours as a minor, but he cut them to 31 minutes so I worked more. I also am "shapely" I guess you could say, and I was sexually harassed by grown men for almost the entire time I worked there. They knew I was 16 - which granted is the consent age but um still creepy - and 30+ year olds would hit on me and tell me I'm so "sexy" and one guy told everyone he wanted to, quote, "f@&k a big girl, but not date one" - in reference to me. I worked there for 9 months before finally quitting because they're AWFUL and my manager was an a-hole who only cared about making money rather than the health and safety of his employees.

Heads up: if you are in the US and are a minor, THERE ARE CHILD LABOR LAWS. They apply to ANY MINOR STILL IN SCHOOL and can only be waived by going through an application process (very short, mainly for students with extreme circumstances and/or high school dropouts [technically when you drop out you are already outside the child labor laws but it’s fuzzy]) and if ANY places denies you your mandatory break, you are legally in the right and can sue :) P.S. speaking from experience in Florida, individual states may vary!

Chipotle can be very unhealthy if you choose the wrong items. It’s a huge amount of food, It’s good quality, and they make it in front of you if you prefer. It’ll last 2 meals or 3 if you make it last.

Here's a story. I used to work for Movie Tavern (now owned by Marcus Theatres but previously Southern Theatres). The working conditions were horrible. My coworkers bragged about not going on a half hour break during an eight hour shift, even though it's the law. Management treated their employees like machines and gave you dirty looks if you asked for a break. I literally had a server tell me once that she had nearly peed her pants on several occasions because she was more concerned about the customers in her theatres than herself. On top of that, the schedule each day only said time in, with no end time. When huge movies like anything Disney (especially Marvel and Star Wars), some people would be forced to work ten to fifteen hour shifts or more. I remember the first weekend Captain Marvel came out, I worked ten and a half hours the first night. I probably would have worked more if I had a car and the last bus wasn't at 12:36. On top of all this, I'm an ADULT. I saw them work some of their underage staff much harder, just because they had cars and cared about their job. Just because some kids have an endless amount of drive and willingness to go the extra mile doesn't mean that big companies like Marcus Theatres, Wendy's, Chipotle, Qdoba, and all of the others.

In texas you don't have to pay "by hour." I worked at a summer camp a couple years ago that paid me $145 a week. I was a minor. I worked 6 days a week, over 14 hours a day. and because I wasn't paid by hour in paperwork, they paid me less than $1.73 per hour. They also technically provided us food and shelter, so I guess that counted? We got the leftovers on weekdays and weren't fed on weekends. Our "shelter" consisted of: a very shitty tent (many of which had tears and/or were blown away during storms). I frequently had to sleep in a wet sleeping bag. I was one of the four cooks feeding 400 campers. All but one of us (the cooks) got sick with easily communicable diseases and all staff were highly encouraged not to tell campers or their parents, and got reprimanded when news spread to some parents that a bunch of us had strep. Sorry for ranting, I just get really pissed off when it comes to labor laws and how this was Legal.

Duuude I'm dying laughing. I just quit my job at Wendy's that I had for over a year and a half, and I can confirm that child labor laws don't mean shit to their management. I was pulling 10-12 hour shifts as a 17 year old still in school, and so were/are many other teenagers. Not to mention it was the most toxic environment I have ever been in and has left me permanently scarred emotionally and physically. While I'm sure not every Wendy's is like this, the one I worked at was beyond horrible and the GM at my store was a racist and homophobic ass who treated all her employees like shit. On multiple occasions she made rude comments about my weight, telling me I had chicken legs and needed to eat a burger, knowing full well I was going through a horrible relapse with my eating disorder. Not to mention the time my best friend had a 40 minute seizure on the floor and the entire time our GM acted like it was an inconvenience to her, yelling at another manager to "do your fucking job" while literally on the phone with 911. The cherry on top though, was that she looked down at my friend still seizing on the floor, and stepped over her body to yell at another co worker. Not to mention when the district manager found out I was leaving for another job, he tried to intimidate me into staying. All in all I highly recommend not getting a job at Wendy's.

I no longer respect Wendy's, Chipotle, and Qdoba anymore even though I've never gone to any of the places since me and my parents don't eat Mexican food because there aren't any nearby fast food places which do sell Mexican food which, is honestly sad and Wendy's...I prefer Burger King, I'm sorry but anyways. These three fast food places are the equivalent of dog poop or your straight-up dumpsters you find on the streets. They disgust me! how could they just pick frickin materialistic things such as money over children's health and life?! That is bogus and I feel highly offended! I want all of them to get what they deserve for violating the same law, not just once or twice but 1,000+ flippin' times?!?!!? What the Turducken even?!?! Man, I wish Dave Thomas was still gifted more years to live so, he can put his foot down and put Wendy's corruptness to a top and educate the people who endorse child labor by being lazy baboons and can't even spend 2 hours in the workplace and apparently the only "solution" is"'Make the children do it! Just pay them more! and if they disobey, put their salary at risk!" Wow! and the oscar award for worst establishment of the year goes to... WENDY'S! Congratulations! You've become a Level 100 A-hole! I hope you're proud of that! You've made Dave Thomas's worst fear happen! and he's now rolling in his grave! for having terrible food( according to D'Angelo), cringe roasts, and also for bullying children! If Dave Thomas was alive, America would be great again! him and Joe Biden would be the heroes of the world! welp, only authorities and great-power can fix this and money can go become somebody's butt-wipe along with cancel culture.

so glad you made this video! i used to work at a famous drugstore in the netherlands. when i was 16 years old they made me do a shift of thirteen hours. when i got a new manager i hoped that things would be better but nope... the new manager was bad at planning in holidays, as in, she just gave the adults working there days off whenever they wanted, the teens and young adults (who were all in college or highschool) however werent allowed the same kind of freedom in choosing days off. Because of this, at some point there were no adults working in the store for two weeks and i and my college, as a 17 year olds, had to make shifts of 10 hours during their absence to keep the place running. THAT IS A WHOPPING 60 HOURS. stupidly, i thaught this was just a normal thing and my manager was quite nice so i didnt know how to handle the situation. but please if you are still a child, and something like this happened or is happening to you, please pl,ease please do something about the situation. it happenes way too often. just because it is your first job doesnt mean you have to be treated like shit.
