I'm in Amino and have a rather large following for my art(which is all watermarked visibly, because let's face it- amino is 85% art thieves); I'm in a very toxic fandom community on there(I actually love the series and like to make aus and ocs for it, but the fandom is rough)and find I have to keep my head ducked. Thankfully I find other people with *their* heads ducked trying to hide from the toxic side too. However the pedophilia accusation is very true, and it's kind of concerning. The problem is, it's not just adults preying on kids in there, but also kids who don't know better trying to get with adults. I'm 22 and have no interest in minors, but I can't even begin to cover the amount of kids who pop into my messages asking to date me or if I'm single or even just dropping a "hey I like you alot. Do you like me?". Of course I shoot them down with the same copy & paste reply at this point; "I'm sorry, but I'm an adult and you're a minor. I'm happy to be friends or art mutuals or something platonic along those lines, but I will not enter a relationship with you. Please dont ask any other adult for dating/romance, its not safe." And this is concerning because these kids are as young as 10 or 11, and as old as 16 at most. I may be being responsible and denying their advances, but I'm not the only adult on there. Some adults may be using these kids who dont know better to get with minors, or even actively seeking out young kids to message them first about a relationship. Amino is filled with many kids who don't know the dangers of predators and internet safety, who are not being monitored online by a parent or guardian, and that is *extremely* scary.

You had me there until you mentioned that reader x character fics are bad- it’s pretty common to imaging inserting yourself into media. They aren’t real people it’s just escapism and daydreaming with not real people. It crosses the line when it deals with real people. That said reader x character fics can definitely still be a toxic space( like when they write about incest/age gap and some fucking weird stuff) it’s just not inherently bad because again they aren’t real people (Edit: also lots of writers get their start in fanfiction because it is a great way to practice writing skills)

My experience with fandoms has been overwhelmingly positive, a place where I could keep the magic of my favourite books and series going long after they finished. Like John Green talks about unabashed and unironic enthusiasm, that's what fandom is to me. But then when I see toxic behaviour or accounts or subtopics within a fandom I just... don't engage, I block, and if it's really disturbing, I report it (happens most often in the avatar fandom because everyone forgets they're actually 14). If we treat fandoms for what they were always intended to be (a place for anyone to express their appreciation and share their enjoyment) then I genuinely can't understand why you would get angry at someone for just liking something different to you (obviously morally wrong things aside). The toxicity is sad and 100% I see it less in real life.

Fanfic is often demonized and seen as something with awful writing and is entirely smut, which harms young people who want to get into creating. some fanfics are genuinely better than some of my favourite professionally published stories and help people grow as creators. For example, I have some of the highest English marks in my entire school, this is literally because I've been writing fanfic since like sixth grade, whether what your writing is even objectively good doesn't matter, because the act of writing itself gives you a better grasp of the English (Or any other) language, which is an important life skill. In conclusion, don't write fanfic about real people, but even if someone wants to write a fucking Bonny X Freddy Fazbear let them. Also, there is a huge difference between writing something that includes abusive relationships, incest and pedophilia and actually shipping it, so long as it's tagged correctly and the person isn't trying to make it "Wholesome and pure" then don't attack people for writing darker themes
