My mum is white and my dad is mixed race (mostly Indian), and my and my brother are white-passing. We've been to America (Florida and California a few times) and every time the TSA people have been horrible to us, especially to my dad. We always get weird looks from them and my dad always gets a very rough and time-consuming pat down whilst the rest of the family is left alone. I wouldn't say that it's to do with race or colour but it literally happens every single time - my dad is always patted down for AGES whilst the white-passing rest of us are left alone. It's so sketchy and horrible, I hate it. And one time my brother got away with bringing a pen knife and a pair of scissors through security, likely because they were too busy with my dad to bother about real security breaches.

the tsa broke my super expensive, discontinued sunglasses that my mom gave to me since she wore them in hs and they were like her one nice thing and i didnt get reimbursed at all even though i couldnt have gitten them anyway since they dont exist anymore :) plus thet stopped me for a random search while i was an unaccompanied minor and only realized that it was in fact illegal to do so half way through while my 13 year old ass was abt to piss myself cuz i thought i was gonna get in trouble for bringing cookies...oh and that one time my older sibling accidentally brought a whole ass sewing kit including needles, pins, and sharp asf sewing scissors in their backpack on the plane :) overall, the point is that the tsa sucks

I went to Orlando and waited three hours in airport security (I’m from the UK) and when I got to go through and have my passport checked, the person looked at me like I was crazy and gave me some disgusting looks. When I came back, I wore a headscarf, and I got a pat down after the full body scan, and they pressed against my bun (which was flat) bare hard and honestly hurt but I’m not about to complain cause I had a 9 hour (turned out to be 10 due to turbulence) flight back home

Sometimes i feel so lucky for having a literal document saying i cant be left alone with people i dont know in places like rooms or closed doors (ptsd)... I was asked the very same thing, to "go with them to further search"... I thought it was because of the machine i need because of breathing problems, but nop... They didnt care about the bag at all (where the portable machine was). So i just handed the papers standing how i cant stay behind closed doors with strangers (specially males) and simply said "i was r*ped through out my whole childhood, i know how this goes" and walked off...

The TSA handling the instrument poorly in case of a threat (bomb or otherwise) is definitely them lying. If you thought something was a bomb, you don’t open, throw around, etc a case, because of the large amounts of bomb types. This was most definitely a TSA agent just mad and chucked this large case to the ground because he was mad for something.

Whenever I think of TSA I just remember the time my best friend to Seattle and the hideous way they mangled her wheelchair by forcing it to collapse the wrong way. The icing on that shitcake is remembering how one of the officers smacked her leg during a frisk thinking she wouldn't notice and laughing when she asked to speak to one of their superiors. TSA = They Suck Ass

TSA always makes me stand up from my wheelchair and walk through the scanner and stand to get patted down. Also the airport wheelchairs suck. You can’t self propel in them and they always require an airport worker, usually male, to push you and won’t let family members do it, which means that I have to stand up and walk to use the bathroom, and I can’t move myself.

i was about to say how lucky i was a few years ago when my grandma who moved to the US gifted me my favourite cross-stitch piece she had done when i was a small child, to take back to the UK where i live now, because an airport employee at the security area promised he would personally make sure it got back to me whole. but then i remembered. grandma told me i could have it when i visited her in the US, but the piece itself was still in our family home in the Philippines. i took it with me much later on when i visited family there. my one good memory of the tsa wasn’t even about the tsa. all i have left are them being very nosy and condescending while they tried to get hundreds of people through an excessively complicated process faster than a regular person could move, let alone, tired and jetlagged passengers.

I thought it was normal for everyone to have to do a "random secondary screening" because up until recently it's happened every time I went through security. I live in a really diverse and generally accepting area and it's frankly appalling that the TSA has managed to be the cause of some of the worst racial profiling I've had to deal with in my short life.

I just wanted to point something out. I cant speak for every airport of course, but I work at a local airport and when you mentioned the first story about the broken instrument you mentioned that the TSA made a statement saying they never opened the case because it wasn't flagged as an explosive. I work in baggage handling, but we work very closely with TSA and we can see in through the window while we are working on the planes. As far as I've seen, TSA opens every single bag that goes through. From surfboard cases to suitcases to purse-sized bags that go through. Every time we're waiting on bags we watch through that window and have to watch the process. Like I said, I cant speak for every airline, thats just something I noticed at mine, so it was interesting when I heard the TSA in the stories response to the whole incident.

The searches can be so uncomfortable. And I have the lucky experience of being able to compare flying before 9/11 and the coming back into the country after. It was a complete 180. It took no time to get through the lines going through the airports heading to Ecuador the August before. On the way home in April I had to pick up my Eticket from one of those machines in the lobby of the Seattle airport. Mind you, I have clearly MADE IT INTO THE COUNTRY! I had had my backpack gone through very thoroughly when leaving Quito, they found items in my bags that I didn’t know came into the country with me, like a butter knife 😶. But then I get to Seattle and at each gate before you board your plane and the announce that there will be a “randomized” selecting of the passengers who will be personally searched before entering the plane. Only the people we had Etickets were searched. And of course they had to use your name when directing you to area you were searched. It was done in front of the other passengers sitting and weighting for their flights and all the people in line boarding the plane since the frisking station was right by the door to boarding the plane. And any thing could set those measly detectors off. The person I got was a male who was old enough to be my father and there were no female agents present to be sure the male agents didn’t cross any boundaries. So I got called up to be searched, my backpack got an decent look over and then I have to be searched personally. Every where that machine made a noise he had to personally touch you searching that area. And he would announce to me what he was doing, repeating “this is just procedure ma’am”. Along my bra was searched, and before he had used the metal detector he said that he would most likely need to search along my bra. It was a strange man feeling under my breasts to make sure that it really was just an underwire, along my back because of the clasps, and some how where the straps connected to the band (not sure why, that isn’t metal). For some reason along my hip was checked as well as along my inseam and his hand stopped just above my knees, but still along my inner thighs. I didn’t know how I felt afterwords, but I knew I wasn’t telling my mom for quite a few years, and even then when I told her she was livid. I have flown domestically since then, obviously getting through those lines takes way longer now, but it still worried me they would have had a frisking station at the gates.

I'm so lucky. Any time I travel, I travel with my mom, who is white. I never get patted down when I'm with her. Except one time I was on my own and they still tried to pat me down even though I was waiting OUTSIDE security and I said I didn't consent to a search and they still tried to do it. My mom got over there real quick because she was in the bathroom and threatened to call the actual police because the dude was clearly just a creep (IN THE GOV'T, LEGIT BADGE AND EVERYTHING) trying to hit on me (A MINOR) under the guise of authority.

I get maybe opening the case to look at what was in it, but even though you can't tell what it is... it literally LOOKS like an instrument. They left it looking like someone snapped it in half and then just put it back. Also, couldn't they have just asked the guy what it was? Cause like, yeah, maybe he would lie if it was something bad, but you could just look it up on Google and confirm that he's telling the truth. Hell, they could've just searched that guys name since he seems famous and found out that way, like, there're just so many other ways they could've done this without leaving the guy with a broken instrument and no reimbursement.
